Inspired by witnessing the difficulties of safely navigating digital media for young girls and teens in my community, I created my project Social Sense. Social Sense is geared toward educating and providing resources for young girls, teenagers, and parents on internet and digital safety. Digital media is interwoven into all parts of our lives. While digital tools can be a phenomenal means of connection and creative expression, I feel passionate about educating young girls, teens, and parents on how to safely use these tools and digital platforms.
After hours of researching educational materials and resources on digital and internet safety I compiled the most helpful and useful resources for young girls, teens, and parents to easily access. Once I gathered appropriate resources I used my degree in graphic design to create compelling, easy to read and comprehend graphics, and presentations to share these materials with the community and on social media.
These resources have been shared via social media and to local schools in my community to educate on safe digital practices. I shared Social Sense internet and digital safety resources and presentations with local elementary, middle, and high school educators to share with their students and parents of their students. I created and distributed different age appropriate resources and tips in order to break down more complex concepts of digital safety for all ages to be able to comprehend.
Additionally, I created handouts to be given out at NAM Nationals. These handouts will be given to girls of all ages competing and their family members attending to further the reach of Social Sense. These handouts serve as a reminder of safe digital practices during the week of NAM Nationals and give access to gathered resources and content Social Sense consists of.
The goal of Social Sense is to create a safer online environment through educating and providing resources for young girls, teenagers, and parents on internet and digital safety.
