January Spotify playlist

CAtegory is: 24k

GOLDEN, the theme I have selected for my 2024 – and the inspiration for the title of my inaugural playlist for January.

These songs make me feel like 24 karat magic. Cheesy, I know. This playlist is what kept me going and empowered me to conquer the mundane of daily life during the month of January.

Some backstory on my monthly playlists. Since I joined Spotify around 2014, I have been obsessed with making tailored playlists for myself. It wasn’t until 2018, when I upgraded to a premium Spotify subscription that I got serious about monthly playlists.

So much so that I created a system, which I have adapted and continue to use. The original system was as follows: The last week of the month is exploration week. The first three weeks of the month are for jamming out to the month’s playlist!
At the time I would use Pandora to find new music and artists through the various stations Pandora offered.
The last week of the month I would extend my nets beyond my normal range and keep a list of all the new songs and artists I was liking. In the final days of the month, I would compile all of the new songs into a new playlist. If I couldn’t find enough new music I would incorporate some of my favorites from the previous month or my previous liked songs.

Spotify has since enhanced their platform and software so that I do not need to go to Pandora to find new bops. In fact, I recently went on to Pandora to try and find new music and I was disappointed. Instead of shuffling new music for me I got almost exclusively songs from my liked list. Lately I have been obsessed with Spotify’s Daylist playlist. It gives a mix of liked songs and new songs that fit within a certain mood. I love that the daylist changes with the time of day.  To be honest, some of my favorite songs have come from Spotify smart shuffle and their other methods such as Daylist, Discover Weekly, and the Made For playlists.

Currently I follow a similar system but a little more relaxed. I am not as strict about the timing of creating a new playlist and finding new music. I have found that after around a month of listening to one playlist, I am itching for a new mix. Once I have built a playlist, I will shuffle or let Spotify smart shuffle so I get the songs I’m loving along with some recommendations.

Another slight change in the playlist process that I incorporated last year was the naming convention. Previously I kept the playlist names standard to the month and year (ie J18, FEB21, etc…). Last year I was more experimental using characters and symbols. This year however, I have decided to choose more unique names. Titles I feel represent the vibe I am feeling in regard to life, the playlist, or the yearly theme.

This is something I absolutely love doing and have been doing for years. It has been fun to go back through old playlists and remember what I was listening to, how I was feeling, and which songs I was obsessed with. These playlists serve as a personal music journal.

I hope you enjoy this month’s 24k playlist as much as I have!
